Food with a Rhythm
The Kimono Club at The Chanakya is all set to redefine the art of slick dining
Clubs are usually spaces that denote exclusivity and there is almost always some snob value attached to them. In that sense, The Kimono Club is no different. Where it differs from other clubs though, is in its ability to turn effortlessly from a lunch place to a watering hole and subsequent party spot. The space, located at The Chanakya, is keen to break stereotypes, and so while there is a sharp focus on partying with deep, almost baroque interiors, a 40-foot bar, noir-like lighting and an abundant use of red, the place is quick to switch into a gorgeous lunch option with one giant ceiling-length skylight— something that will work well in the depths of the Delhi winter. Wine lovers can relax, they will be more than happy with the curated wine list (don’t forget this is by Ashish Roy Kapur and Joydeep Singh who have successfully set up Whisky Samba and The Wine Company in Gurugram). But you would be foolish to dismiss The Kimono Club as a space for after hours alone. While it looks like a fun, party spot, that does not take away from the fact that one of India’s coolest chefs, Vikramjit Roy is at its helm. Best known for revolutionising dining at Tian and the ITC Maurya, he spins his Asian charm here as well. The Japanese and Chinese-inspired menu excels and there is little to quibble over given the gusto with which each dish is plated and presented. Almost every dish is pretty, high on technique and executed with a great deal of restraint. The lobster and truffle dumpling, crispy prawn cheung fun and roasted pork bao are all distinct but hum with bright, bold flavours that leave their mark.
