A Dynast’s Rise
Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa’s younger son, B.Y. Vijayendra, is rising fast through the state BJP ranks. He was appointed state unit vice-president last year, much to the chagrin of party old-timers. He also recently ducked corruption allegations from former Union minister Basanagouda Patil Yatnal. Recently, amid rumours that a replacement was being chosen for his father, Vijayendra flew to Delhi to meet senior party leaders. Given that the BJP is known to be wary of dynastic politics, it will be interesting to see how the party’s leadership handles this scion’s rise.
