It wasn’t just the unusually high demand for electricit­y this summer that caused a crisis in the country. Eqaually to blame were poor planning, bad economics and policy failures by the key stakeholde­rs in the sector—the distributi­on companies (discoms) supplying power to the consumers, the power generation companies (gencos) producing it, Coal India, which supplies coal for thermal generation, and Indian Railways, which transports coal to the various plants.
