GENCOS: OPERATING BELOW PAR

-

The paradox is that even though electricity demand peaked to 207 GW in April, our gencos have an installed capacity of 399 MW—25 per cent more than what was needed

But the shortage exists because of heavy dependence on thermal power, which accounts for 77 per cent of the supply

With imported coal prices soaring and not enough domestic coal supplies, thermal power plants are operating at half their load factor, leading to shortage of power supply

The huge dues owed to them by discoms messes up gencos’ finances, including timely purchase of coal
