POT AND PLAN

Where to place the cabinet? Is lighting important? Our expert answers these and more through a mini guide to a well-planned kitchen

- By ANIKA MITTAL DHAWAN

When designing a kitchen, it is important to consider functionality, safety, and aesthetics. A well-designed kitchen can help in better mobility and access, to enjoy cooking. While planning, devise a layout that maximises storage and provides easy accessibility. At this stage, it helps to have a checklist to understand the kitchen usage. Here are a few aspects to consider.

Lighting is Key Incorporate natural lighting into the kitchen to elevate the energy. However, besides natural light you must also consider artificial lighting to optimise efficiency and safety. An aesthetically pleasing, functional, and well lighted kitchen should include ambient, task, pendant, and decorative lighting.

Ventilation Works Wonders Proper ventilation is another key component when planning the kitchen. Along with windows for cross-ventilation, chimneys and exhaust fans are a must-have since Indian cooking styles are not conducive to open plans.

Functional Cabinetry Choose steady cabinetry made with durable, water-resistant materials and complemented with the correct hardware to maximise safety.

Walls and flooring Walls and floor finishes and surfaces should be resilient to bear a kitchen’s everyday wear and tear, especially resistance to heat and water is critical.

Green is Good Along with the above, bringing in a touch of greenery in the kitchen through potted herbs, fresh flowers, or an

indoor plant can liven up the same and add freshness.

Kitchen trends 2022 will see the use of more metallics in the cabinets, gold or bronze in faucets and sinks, and the use of metal meshes in cabinets. An amalgamation of contemporary materials with vintage is another trend to look out for. While classic wood finishes, neutrals and marble trends will continue, more people will be open to exploring colours. In addition, innovative appliances that embrace cutting-edge technology will make kitchens smarter and friendlier for everyday use.
