STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Before unleashing your inner chef, don’t forget to make room for stacking, stashing and storing everything from appliances to utensils

- By SUKRITI SHARRMA

Everyone wants to maximise storage in their kitchen space, however every kitchen layout is different and unique and needs certain amount of thought and planning. That said, there are a few general rules and tips you can follow in any kitchen to make the most of every extra inch.

Maximise Heights

For certain kitchen spaces, we can maximise cabinet storage by taking the cabinets until the false ceiling height that is available. As a standard the height that is accessible or the height, that clients prefer to reach is 8 ft from the finished floor. However, if the false ceiling height is higher, we can add another layer of storage above 8 ft to take the height to say 10 ft or higher as what’s available.

Utilise all the Kitchen Corners

Corners in the kitchen can offer a lot of additional storage space. There are various storage solutions such as corner carousals, corner LeMans or just storage shelves that are easy to access and use. I prefer customisable corner tall unit storage, which is perfect for storing all the household ration in one place.

Can you fit an Island?

Islands are what bind the kitchen together, so if you have the space, see if an island fits

in the kitchen space. This way you can get additional counter space as well as storage on both sides of the island. If you cannot fit an island in the centre, you even have options of designing the space in a way you can add a pseudoisland from the wall.

Buy the Right Storage Containers

Many times, you don’t need additional storage space, you just need to organise the existing storage space in the right manner. Organise storage in the right kind of jars (square instead of round) to maximise drawer space. Compartmentalise the storage in the fridge in the right baskets. Most of the times organising the storage in the right manner can help you optimise your existing space in the storage cabinets.

Try and Increase the Depths

If you have the space in the kitchen, you can even increase the depth of your cabinets from the standard 2 ft depth to 2.5 ft depth. Do this for drawers and pull outs so that once the drawers open everything is visible and easily accessible.

Design out of the Box

Certain kitchen layouts have an odd column here or there that reduces the accessible storage leaving half a foot of space in front of it. Instead of avoiding that space, design the kitchen including that space. Even 15 to 20 cm of space is great to house all the spice or condiments bottles.

Every kitchen is different and needs to be looked at with a fresh eye to see how space can be maximised.
