2 Militants Killed In Shopian Encounter: Police
Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed on Monday in a gunbattle with government forces in south Kashmir's Shopian district, police said.
According to police officials, special operations group (SOG) of police, army's 34 RR and CRPF on Monday laid a siege around Zeipora village of the district on specific information about the presence of militants in the village. When the joint team started combing operations, the officials said, the militants hiding in the village opened fire upon them in a bid to thwart their advances.
“The search team returned the fire setting off an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed,” officials said.
They added that the militants turned down repeated surrender
offers and engaged the joint team in gunfight. According to the reports, the internet services were snapped across the district to ensure smooth conduct of anti-militancy operation and to prevent any law and order situation.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued here on Monday evening, a police spokesperson said that the two killed militants were locals and associated with Hizbul Mujahideen.
He identified the duo as Sabzar Ahmad Ganie of Kulgam and Amir Ahmad Bhat of Shopian.
The police spokesperson further said that the two militants were part of groups involved in many crime cases
“Arms, ammunition & other incriminating materials were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other crimes,” he said.
He further said that the last rites of the killed militants shall be performed after conducting medico-legal formalities and their nearest family members shall be allowed to participate in the last rites.
“In this connection police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared off of all the explosive materials, if any,” the police spokesperson added.
