Agra College Suspends 3 Kashmiri Students

NEW DELHI: Three Kashmiri students have been suspended from a college in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly shouting slogans and uploading a Whatsapp cheering Pakistan’s victory over India in the T20 world cup.

The three students were identified as Altaf Sheikh and Arshid Yousuf, both third year students, and fourth year student Showkat Ganai.

They were enrolled in civil engineering course at the Raja Balwant Singh Engineering Technical Campus in Agra.

It isn’t immediately clear what the contents of the chats were. The move comes days after Kashmiri students in two colleges in Punjab faced mob violence after some students celebrated Pakistan’s victory late Sunday night.

The students have been expelled with immediate effect. According to college authorities, the students were found involved in an indiscipline act of posting status in favour of Pakistan the match on Sunday October 24, a statement from RBS engineering technical campus said.

However, the students’ woes didn’t end with the expulsion.

The Agra Police, in a statement issued on Twitter, has also taken note of the incident and lodged an FIR against the three youths. The police said that it was acting on a complaint but didn’t disclose its contents or identify the complainant.

“Superintendent of Police Nagar Agra [Vikash Kumar] gave a byte in relation to the legal action being taken on the basis of the complaint received on the police station Jagdishpura regarding the anti-India remarks during the chat on WhatsApp app on the victory of the Pakistan team in the cricket match played between India-Pakistan,” Agra Police wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the police in Srinagar has also lodged two FIRs under anti-terrorism laws against unspecified medical students of the Government Medical College and Sher-iKashmir Institute of Medical Sciences. The move was widely condemned by regional political parties.
