Medical Students Found Cheering for Pak Booked Under UAPA

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir police has booked an unspecified number of medical students under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for celebrating Pakistan cricket team’s win against India in the T20 World Cup.

A police official confirmed to Kashmir Observer that they have registered two separate cases against those who celebrated Pakistan's victory. The official added that the investigations are on in the open FIR and the accused are yet to be identified.

The videos of the students, mostly female, showing them cheering after the Pakistani side defeated India with 10 wickets, went viral on social media

sparking a debate with some denouncing them as traitors and others defending their right to celebrate victory of their favourite team.

Official sources said that the police have taken notice of two incidents particularly – one at the hostel of the prestigious SKIMS hospital in Soura and another at the hostel of the Government Medical College (GMC) in Karan Nagar, Srinagar.

As per an FIR filed at Soura police station (under FIR No. 104/2021), “during intervening night of 24 and 25 October 2021 after Pakistan won the one day cricket match, students pursuing MBBS and other medical degrees residing in the ‘un-married’ hostel of SKIMS Soura raised slogans and burst firecrackers”.

It says that in this connection a case was registered under section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), 105A and 505 IPC.

The police have also filed an FIR (under no. 71/2021) under section 13 of the UAPA at the police station Karan Nagar against the students residing at the GMC hostel, “who were crying and dancing last night evening after Pakistan won the World Cup T20 match against India”. (With inputs from Agencies)
