S Delhi users say ac­counts com­pro­mised

AT least 50 Pun­jab Na­tional Bank (PNB) cus­tomers on Tues­day evening re­ceived cash with­drawal mes­sages on their mo­bile phones af­ter they used ATMs at New Delhi’s Sheikh Sarai and Malviya Na­gar ar­eas, even when the ma­chines didn’t dis­pense any cash. Sus­pect­ing hack­ing of soft­ware by cy­ber crim­i­nals, alarmed cus­tomers on Wed­nes­day morn­ing rushed to their re­spec­tive branches, de­mand­ing clar­i­fi­ca­tion, trans­ac­tion de­tails and even com­pen­sa­tion.

Branch man­ager, PNB Malviya Na­gar, San­jay Ku­mar said that the mat­ter is un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion. “The com­plaints are be­ing trans­ferred to the cy­ber crime cell,” he said. Com­plainant Rakesh Ku­mar, protest­ing at the PNB Sheikh Sarai branch, said: “I used my ATM card on Tues­day evening but the kiosk was un­able to dis­pense cash. I as­sumed that the machine was not work­ing. But af­ter few min­utes, I re­ceived mes­sages

about with­drawal of Rs 10,000 and 20,000 from my ac­count.” “I rushed to the ATM and saw sev­eral cus­tomers there with the same com­plaint,” Rakesh said. Vi­jay Ku­mar, DCP of south dis­trict told Mail To­day: “Three cus­tomers have lodged po­lice com­plaints and the mat­ter is un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion. We learnt about 20 to 22 per­sons be­come vic­tims of ATM fraud.”
