Val­ley tense as se­cu­rity forces and youth clash dur­ing fu­neral

TEN­SION pre­vailed in the Shopian area of South Kash­mir af­ter top Al Badr mil­i­tant com­man­der Zeenat ul Is­lam was killed in an en­counter in Kathora area of Kul­gam district on Satur­day.

In a joint op­er­a­tion by the Army, po­lice and CRPF, two ter­ror­ists — iden­ti­fied as Zeenat ul Is­lam and Sha­keel Ahmed Dar — were killed.

Clashes erupted be­tween groups of youth and se­cu­rity forces in Su­gan vil­lage of south Kash­mir's Shopian district amid mul­ti­ple fu­neral prayers for Zeenat-ul-Is­lam. The se­cu­rity forces on Sun­day re­sorted to aerial fir­ing to to chase away the peo­ple from as­sem­bling in the vil­lage. Po­lice said at least a dozen per­sons were in­jured in the forces' ac­tion. The in­jured were taken to nearby hos­pi­tal, where­from four of them were re­ferred to SMHS hos­pi­tal here, the po­lice said. A woman also suf­fered in­juries when she was al­legedly hit by a se­cu­rity forces' ve­hi­cle dur­ing the clashes. She has been hos­pi­talised.

The au­thor­i­ties im­posed re­stric­tions and also snapped in­ter­net ser­vices in the lo­cal ar­eas.
