INNOVATIONS IN THE MEDICAL DEVICES INDUSTRY ARE CHANGING THE SCOPE OF HEALTHCARE WORLDWIDE

-

What are some significant innovations taking place in your respective field(s)? Which among these is the most exciting and why? How will it (or they, if more than one) impact your organization?

Today, innovations in the medical devices industry are changing the scope of healthcare worldwide. New technologies coming up is a result of the pressure to reduce healthcare expenditures, while also diversifying the competition and improving patient care. The effects posed during the COVID-19 pandemic have introduced the world to a "new normal." Going forward, I believe that the health system in India will be much more consumer-centric, wellness-oriented, and most importantly – digitally connected. The growing trend towards digital healthcare in India was already well on its way before COVID-19, but there have been dramatic changes over the past few years in the areas of tele-health, teleradiology, and other remote workflows. There is a need in the Healthcare sector to implement virtual and innovative health management tools, devices and techniques to support patients right from the hospital to home, thereby extending the healthcare efforts. BPL Medical believes in the same, and our wide range of solutions cater to some of the most prominent areas in healthcare such as Cardiology, Critical Care and Surgery, Mother and Child Care, Imaging as well as Homecare devices. Although we as a company realize and acknowledge the

adversities caused due to the pandemic, we also believe that it has opened growth opportunities and pushed companies like ours to look forward to such novel technological developments to upgrade and provide innovative state-of-the-art solutions.

Are you planning any new launches or are looking to open up new markets?

Keeping our honorary Prime Minister's vision of making India self-reliant (Atma-nirbhar Bharat) in mind, we are extending our capability by introducing a new manufacturing unit in Bangalore. In the next few months, the new facility will begin with its operations in addition to the existing capacity, which is already at its peak. This initiative was undertaken in order to focus on make-in-india for our developed products & provide high-quality solutions to our customers. The opening of our new manufacturing unit shows our commitment to further supporting our customers' ambition of providing quality healthcare. We are proud to expand our production capacity and innovation footprint and to contribute to India's development. What are some of the items that we import currently should be considered for developing and manufacturing in India? Could cooperation between you and Indian institutions (such as the IITS and engineering ones) or other Indian manufacturers be of benefit? For example, a tie-up between a manufacturer of gloves and medical apparel with an Indian rubber plantation (latex producer) might be mutually beneficial for both.

The Indian Government is very focused on 'Atma-nirbhar (self-reliant) Bharat', which also includes the medical devices industry. So, I agree that co-operation between different Indian companies and institutions is beneficial. Also, while addressing the pressing issues arising due to the coronavirus in the last few years, one thing was certain – medical device companies like ours were needed more than ever. The period of pandemic demanded our sector to adapt to novel ways of doing business and reach even greater heights of purposedriven collaborations through public–private partnerships. For instance, we provided our Oxygen Concentrator technology to the Goi-enterprise Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and worked closely with them to set up sourcing and manufacturing of OCS, which is effectively done and now we are producing Oxygen Concentrators on a large scale.

Any thoughts on the role that Government can play – any tips/suggestions/view-points that may be shared?

Make In India is a key initiative for Medical Devices and the launch of the PLI scheme. But before manufacturing it is the conceptualization and making of a new product that involves lots of investments in the R&D on similar lines like PLI, GOI must also encourage companies to hire talented R&D resources by subsidizing the major portion of salary cost (Say 50-60%). This will motivate and start bringing products faster to realize the dream of ATMA NIRBHAR get realized quickly.

As a Healthcare & Medtech professional, give your insight on the latest technology adopted by BPL?

As we look at future and overall connected environment getting planned. We think that products that are on an open platform with global standard output on connectivity will only remain in play. For the last few years, we are developing all devices which are connected including a few home care devices. Also, we keep in mind what is most relevant for our patients, we tailor devices accordingly.

Before any specific success story, I wish to tell all that, the medical devices market in India is on the rise and for minimum next two decades, healthy double-digit growth will take place. Now I wish to convey humbly that we grew our revenue in last 8 years by 6X, which is very satisfying. This success has come from the clear direction as a strategy, to be honest, and transparent with the customer, operate at a quite low margin to expand the market and invested in our after-sales service organization for prompt service response. In the specific story, very proud of ourselves as an organization working with Govt and several Corporate organizations during the second wave and participated in addressing Oxygen Concentrator's requirements across the country and our field team did a wonderful job supporting end customers during the crisis time.

• Safe to use System for Indian health care.

• Modular and Upgradable Healthcare Infrastructure.

• Qualifications Criteria : Life saving operation theaters, intensive care units and medicals gas delivery system works should be undertaken only by medical companies who are specialized in there respective field. • Technical expertise evaluation of medical companies must be made mandatory to ensure “qualified and trained team of professionals only to be involved in Hospital projects” • No subcontracts work for operation theatres, intensive care units and medicals gas delivery system should be accepted and not to be allowed. • Medicals gas delivery & Oxygen Supply system should have 3 source of supplies in all Hospitals.

• Clarity on Make in India for Life saving operation theaters, intensive care units and medical gas delivery system products.

As a Healthcare Infrastructure professional professional , Give your insight on latest technology in OT & ICU fabrication?

Operation theaters rooms are among the most demanding and complex areas of a hospital. This is not just because of the interdisciplinary work flows and the high hygiene and infection prevention requirements, but also because the flows of patients, staff and material from sterile and contaminated environments meet in an operating room. Operating rooms are highly equipped areas with electricity, video and data lines, medical gases and sometimes also special ventilation systems. Moreover, innovative surgical methods and the advances in medical technology result in constantly changing requirements with regard to work processes and room concepts, as well as cost efficiency aspects.

The intensive care unit is a highly equipped area and one of the most costintensive parts of the hospital. Induction rooms and recovery areas, also referred to as holding areas, are an integral part of the OR area and therefore located in close proximity. The same is true for intensive care, which may follow immediately after surgery. All these areas must fulfil specific medical, therapeutic and nursing functions, and comply with the requirements of infection prevention and hospital hygiene.

MDD insight on latest technology in OT & ICU fabrication?

• Design as per NABH norms

• HVAC design 20,10,3 and 0.3 micron filtration

• 12mm Solid Mineral surface wall and ceiling panels with absolute flatness and vertical level adjustment of sub frame

• Hermetic sealing and Sound insulation

• Non-flammable materials

The inclusion of efficient work flows into operating room & intensive care unit planning and path layout is just as important here as the option of flexible conversions, since the space requirements may vary over the period of use depending on the quantity of medical products and on the processing method. Depending on the room concept and size, the healthcare facility should be divided into up to three different zones (contaminated/ disinfected/sterile).
