In the cover story we follow up on the Outbound MICE Trends, 2014, future markets, newer destinations for 2015 and the growth prospects in this segment.
Talking about outbound MICE, Acharyya said that the short-haul destinations of South East Asia have been doing well added that, Thailand and Singapore are the popular destinations. He said, “Malaysia is no longer as popular, because one of their main amusement parks, ‘Genting Highlands Theme Park’ is under renovation and will be closed for two years. It will reopen in a new way after two years. For incentive tours corporates are mainly looking for destinations where activity is possible throughout the day. Stag travellers look forward to visiting casinos and enjoying nightlife. Also, newer destinations like Bali, Bintam and Batam have been picking up in Indonesia. These islands are popular for their natural beauty. Beijing and Shanghai are popular. Dubai is also doing well for conferences.” Corporates also have budget categories, for Thailand they spend Rs. 30 - 35,000. Next, they are spending, Rs 40 - 45,000 for places like Phuket. Then Rs 50 - 70,000 for China, and so on. Telling us about the largest group he had recently done, he said it was a group size of 1200 pharmacists for their Star Award Night at Grand Hyatt, Dubai. Generally they also do groups of 500 - 600 in batches of 40 - 50 and so on. To get a good air fare, the group size should be 40; else the air fare goes up. In outbound MICE revenue is about 8 - 10 per cent of the total volume of business. In domestic, even though the business volume is less, retention is 15 - 20 percent. Markup for domestic MICE is almost double that of outbound MICE.
