KOLKATA: With the number of Covid cases going up at an alarming rate in Bengal, sources in the Health department said there were plans to provide critical care treatment to Covid patients in MR Bangur Hospital and Beliaghata ID Hospital.

There are 650 beds in MR Bangur out of which 192 are HDU. More number of beds would be set up.

Most of the Covid beds have been filled up following a spike in fresh cases. The Covid beds at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital would be increased. Presently, it has 42 Covid beds. The number would be increased up to 120.

The State Health department is taking various steps to enhance infrastructure so that any possible situation can be handled. Following the instruction from the State government, the Health department is putting in place 20 percent more infrastructural facilities than what it had been during the last year when the pandemic broke out. All the hospitals have already been directed to make necessary arrangements of Covid beds. All the medical colleges have been directed to make adequate arrangements of oxygen cylinders so that any unforeseen situations can be met. In an earlier directive, the Health department had asked various Covid testing centers and medical colleges to conduct more RT-PCR tests.

In view of the rising number of cases, Covid wards would be set up in more number of hospitals. All the medical colleges and district hospitals have already been asked to open an isolated Covid ward.

All these hospitals now have to treat Covid patients in separate wards. Covid patients are now being treated in 35 government hospitals and 11 private hospitals.
