At 7,713 fresh cases, previous highest surge crossed; 34 deaths in a day

KOLKATA: Single-day fresh infection in Bengal reached 7,713 on Saturday, higher than Friday's figure of 6,910.

The State has also seen the highest number of casualties during second wave on Saturday as the figure jumped up to 34.

The number of Covid deaths in a single-day stood at 26 on Friday. The highest infected cases and also casualties were recorded in Bengal on Saturday. The rise in singleday Covid cases has become a cause of concern for the health officials.

Abdur Rahman, outgoing Trinamool Congress MLA from Murarai died at a private hospital in the city. He tested positive for Covid after he was again declared candidate by Trinamool Congress. The party changed the candidate. Rahman was undergoing treatment and finally succumbed to his ailments. It may be mentioned that RSP candidate Pradip Kumar Nandi who had tested positive for COVID-19 five ago, died at a hospital in Berhampore on Friday. Congress candidate Rezaul Haque who was contesting from Samserganj constituen­cy in Murshidaba­d died at a private hospital in the city on Thursday after being infected with Covid.

The total tally of infected people reached 6,51,508 on Saturday. The number of active Covid cases however stands at 45,300. Around 5,95,668 patients have already been released from the hospitals out of which 3,426 patients were discharged in the past 24 hours. The Covid recovery rate on Saturday stood at 91.43 percent. The percentage of positive cases out of the sample tested stands at 6.67.

The percentage of occupancy of Covid beds in the State jumped to 39.59 percent. The state has so far carried out 97,62,086 Covid sample tests out of which 46,971 were performed in the past 24 hours. The total death toll in the state has reached 10,540.

Kolkata in past 24 hours registered 10 deaths and North 24-Parganas has registered 8 deaths, Murshidaba­d 5, Birbhum 3, South 24-Parganas 2, Purulia 2, Jalpaiguri 1, East Burdwan 1, Howrah 1, Hooghly 1.

Kolkata in the past 24 hours has registered 1,998 fresh cases followed by North 24-Parganas 1,639. The total death toll in Kolkata has so far reached 3,201. North 24-Parganas has lost 2,588 people so far. The tally of infected patients in Kolkata has gone up to 1,50,800 while North 24-Parganas has so far seen a total 1,40,572. South 24-Parganas has registered 491 new Covid cases in the past 24 hours. The total number of Covid infected patients in South 24-parganas has gone up 41,890.

There are around 1,796 ICU/HDU beds functional in Covid hospitals. Around 525 ventilator­s are still functionin­g in Covid hospitals. The total number of earmarked Covid beds stood at 7,676 on Saturday.

There are currently 200 Safe Homes and around 11,507 beds are there in these Safe Homes. Around 105 testing laboratori­es have been made functional in the state while one is waiting for approval.

There are 61 dedicated Covid hospitals operationa­l in the state out of which 49 are government hospitals.
