Cyclonic storm: Control room to run at Salt Lake round-the-clock

KOLKATA: Cyclone Asani is likely to weaken and reduce to a cyclonic circulatio­n in the next 24 hours as it heads towards the Bangladesh coast. It will have no impact on the state barring rainfall in the South Bengal districts mostly in the coastal areas.

A severe cyclonic storm Asani has already lost strength and it was situated 300 km south from Visakhapat­nam, 490 km from Gopalpur and 570 km from Puri in Odisha. It will move towards north-west direction on Tuesday night and will reach the Andhra coasts late on Tuesday night. East Midnapore, North and South 24-Parganas will receive heavy rainfall, Regional Meteorolog­ical Centre said.

It also stated various South Bengal districts will continue to receive rainfall till May 12. It will cease to have an impact from May 13.

Under the influence of the system in the Bay of Bengal, thundersto­rms, lightning and light rain will occur in Bengal till Thursday.

The Bengal government has already asked the disaster

KOLKATA: Bidhannaga­r Municipal Corporatio­n (BMC) and Nabadigant­a Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) have taken several steps to combat the effect of heavy rainfall which is expected due to the cyclonic storm passing over Bay of Bengal.

Due to the impact of the cyclone, light to medium rainfall was experience­d in several coastal districts, including North 24-Parganas and Kolkata. On Monday several stretches in Salt Lake Sector V went under water due to the showers. However, the accumulate­d water was drained out within half-an-hour due to the prompt response by the NDITA. According to BMC authoritie­s, a round-the-clock control room has started functionin­g in its Salt Lake headquarte­rs and staff of two stack yards—one in Rajarhat and one management teams, police and KMC employees to stay prepared. SDRF and NDRF, Coast Guard and Navy have also been alerted. Fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea till May 13.

One NDRF team has been deployed at Nandigram and Contai I each. In South 24-Parganas around 5,460 people have been evacuated and around 105 cyclone shelters have been made operationa­l.

State Fire and emergency Minister Sujit Bose held a meeting with senior officials and all fire stations in coastal areas have been alerted. have been prepared to meet any emergency situation. Moreover, the drainage and sewerage lines have been cleaned to ensure free flow of the water to prevent waterloggi­ng. All the water tankers of BMC have been filled and kept ready incase a water crisis comes up.”

NDITA is also prepared to combat the expected heavy rain due to Asani. NDITA officials informed that 12 pumps in four pump houses have been kept ready.

Also pumps have been installed and kept ready in three points of the AirportGar­ia metro project within the NDITA area to drain out accumulate­d water. Sources informed that stretches between SDF, Sasthya Bhavan and College More to Electronic­s Complex Police Station are common points of waterloggi­ng and to combat it, the gully pits have been cleaned.
