Wrapping up ‘Devi Chowdhurani’ in style
Film boasts a stellar ensemble cast including Prosenjit Chatterjee as Bhabani Pathak, Srabanti as protagonist, alongside Arjun Chakraborty, Bibriti Chatterjee, Darshana Banik
Though it was the wrapup party of Bengali film ‘Devi Chowdhurani’, director Subhrajit Mitra revealed a few days of shooting is left due to veteran actor Sabyayachi Chakraborty’s recent illness. His scenes will be filmed in Kolkata.
‘Devi Chowdhurani’ stands out for its grand scale. In an industry where budget constraints are common, Mitra took on a challenging task. Yet, with intense pre-production and planning, he managed a demanding shooting schedule lasting over three months. “Every moment was challenging. However, thanks to the comprehensive research and thorough pre-production, we were able to efficiently troubleshoot any obstacles,” said Mitra, who shot the film in Kolkata, Purulia, Jharkhand and Bolpur.
The film boasts a stellar ensemble cast including Prosenjit Chatterjee as Bhabani Pathak, Srabanti as the protagonist, alongside Arjun Chakraborty, Bibriti Chatterjee, Darshana Banik, and others. Prosenjit, known for his methodical approach, dedicated
months to prepare for his role. “Bhabani Pathak is a historical figure. The fight sequences have been executed with finesse,” he said at the wrap-up party of the film.
Srabanti found the mental challenge of her role more significant than physical exertion. “I understood the weight of my character’s portrayal and knew I had to deliver. Also, I loved the action sequences,” she said.
Ever since the announcement of the film, Mitra has emphasized that his film draws inspiration from historical accounts rather than the Bengali novel by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee or the 1974
Bengali film of the same name starring Suchitra Sen. “My film delves into history rather than literature, hence the extensive research process,” he said.
After the success of his previous film ‘Avijatrik,’ which won National Awards, one might wonder if Mitra feels pressured to repeat that success. “It’s more about responsibility than pressure. I represent Bengal, and I aim to uphold the standard of Bengali cinema,” he said.
Meanwhile, talks about a special relationship between Mitra and Srabanti began circulating while working on the film. However, the director denied them.
