NEW DELHI: In the chilly November of 2007, lives of Fareeda and Afsar came to a standstill after their one-and-ahalf-year old son was kidnapped from a government hospital in Jahangirpuri. Nine years later, their prayers were finally answered to as a mere mention about sighting the boy led the couple to their son, Fawad, (name changed), who is now 10 years and 8 months old.

With this, the Delhi Police solved the case of kidnapping and arrested a couple from East Delhi’s Krishna Nagar area on August 22. The couple has been sent to judicial custody. According to the senior police officers of the East district, the accused have been identified as Mohd Samin and Nargis.

A childless woman, Nargis carried out a recce of Babu Jag Jivan Ram hospital for a few days and found small children in the gynaecological ward left by their mothers who waited for their turn in a long queue. Taking advantage of the fact that Fareeda, standing in queue, had seated her son on a bench, Nargis lifted him and fled the scene.

Senior investigators shared that the accused couple kidnapped Fawad. Childless, they raised him and provided him education, by admitting him to a MCD school in Krishna Nagar.

Talking to Millennium Post, Fareeda, smiling from ear to ear shared: “In May this year, my husband Afsar and I went to attend a wedding. Here, I met with an acquaintance from my native place in Bareilly. While we were talking, she told me that she had seen a young boy, with similar facial features of my missing child in Old Seelampur. When I persisted, she showed me an album which had the picture of Fawad (name changed) with that couple,”

Residents of Bhalswa Dairy area, Fareeda and Afsar approached the SHO of Krishna Nagar police station.

A senior police officer said that they carried house to house checks in the area but in vain. Then, based on a tip-off that the accused couple is living in Gali number 1 of Old Seelmapur, they raided their house but the couple had vacated, as told by the locals.

“In the meantime, police teams were carrying out simultaneous checks in government schools and MCD schools in the area. They further narrowed down the search to Class II students as they knew that the missing child is in the age-group of 7-12,” said an investigator.

On August 22, based on a tip-off, we apprehended the couple from Gali number 2 in Old Seelampur. During interrogation, they said that Fawad (name changed) is their biological son. When questioned where was Fawad born, the couple broke down and confessed that they were childless and had kidnapped the boy. The cops also said that Fawad has been shifted to a child welfare home till the time the court decides his custody after studying the DNA reports.
