Severe staff crunch in Gautam Buddh Nagar police station leads to near collapse of new services

- RAHUL SINGH

NOIDA: The Gautam Buddh Nagar police station is battling a severe shortage of manpower and resources, which has now resulted in a near complete collapse of new and hi-tech services implemented by the state government.

The Smart City is constantly facing a rise in population but the police are finding it very hard to cope up with as the department is running short of staff in the police stations of the district.

Gautam Buddh Nagar district, which includes the twin cities of Noida and Greater Noida, currently has 37 inspectors, 280 sub-inspectors and 1,700 constables to safeguard a population of over 17 lakh that keeps on rising at a rate of one to one lakh fifty thousand annually. According to a law enforcing agency, the district needs around 50 inspectors, 400 sub-inspectors and around 2,500 constables to maintain the current law and order situation in the district.

Last month, the state government launched a centralised emergency response system, UP100, under which 37 new and hi-tech PCR vans were deployed in the district but the police constables who were placed there were from the existing police force of the district. No extra force was provided to the district to handle these hi-tech PCR vans. To meet the demand of around 200 police vans in the district, the department is currently struggling with just 162 police vans.

The district administration has written several letters to the government demanding extra police force and the increment in the number of police stations in the district. A proposal of six new police stations in the district has been sent to the regime that includes police stations in Sector 63, Sector 106, Sector 142, Sector 115, Okhla Barrage and Phase-1. Once pressed into action, they will reduce the pressure from current police stations that are handling the pressure to keep a watch in the extra regions.

The demand for security cover from the political leaders, especially from the ruling party, is also one of the root problems for the deployment of a large number of cops. Dharmendra Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Gautam Buddh Nagar, said: “The population of the district will rise after the possession of newly built flats in Noida Extension and other sectors. To cope with the ratio, we have very less number of cops and other resources. We are expecting that soon more resources and cops will be given to the district to address the demands”.
