GURUGRAM: The official confirmation of rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in Civil Lines is a second such case in succession in Gurugram.

Earlier, a 10-year-old girl was brutally raped, murdered and dumped near a park at Sushant Lok.

In addition to these two brutal cases of rape and murder, there have also been seven cases of sexual crimes against infants in the city in January 2017.

In 2016, there were 106 cases of sexual crimes that were reported against infants in Gurugram.

On Friday, a special high level meeting was held between the senior police officials of Gurugram Police to discuss of the two recent cases of rape and murder of the infants.

Briefing about the meeting, a senior official highlighted that the Gurugram Police will be forming a special team to deal with such crimes.

“Besides these two unfortunate cases of rape and murder, there are one or two more cases where we have still not been able to nab the culprits. We will now be forming a special team to not only quickly catch the culprits but also undertake measures to prevent such acts,” said a senior official.

The official also entailed certain measures taken by the Gurugram Police to prevent sexual crimes against infants.

“We have identified certain sensitive areas in the city and deployed our officials over there in plain clothes to maintain surveillance. We are also in the process of streamlining the video coverage captured in CCTV cameras so that we can catch the culprits quickly,” added the official.

While the two recent cases of rape and murder have been reported from slums in the city, police sources maintained that there should be no specific trend that should be connected to such crimes.

“I would urge that generalisations should not be formed in such cases as is been done by most of the citizens. To say Gurugram is unsafe because of such cases will be unfair to the city and its residents,” said a senior police official who is in charge of handling cases of sexual crimes in the city.

The official also mentioned that all those rapists earlier held have not been mentally unstable or juveniles.

“There are several categories of rapists. In our interrogation, one person raped an infant as he was unemployed and was advised that upon committing this act, he may get a job. There was another case where a person was impotent and he committed this crime just to vent out his anger,” said the senior official.
