PROTEST FOR NAJEEB THROWS TRAFFIC out of gear in Central Delhi
NEW DELHI: Traffic in Central Delhi went haywire on Monday as commuters travelling from Delhi to Noida and East Delhi from ITO faced long tailbacks in front of the Delhi Police Headquarters as missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed’s mother along with a few other organisations staged a massive protest accusing the cops of mishandling the case.
Delhi Police barricaded the road in front of the PHQ after the protest began at around 3 pm when students of SIO (Students Islamic Organisation) along with JNU students gathered at PHQ gates holding banners and posters. The police and the para-military forces were seen having a tough time controlling them.
The protestors were demanding justice for Najeeb Ahmed who has been missing since October last year.
The police received calls of traffic jams from most parts of Central Delhi. The blocking of the East Delhi and Noida road from ITO stretched the jam till Rajghat and Ramleela ground. Pragati Maidan which is near ITO also witnessed massive jams due to the protest.
Even, the roads stretching from Sarai Kale Khan was choked and commuters had a tough time reaching their destinations.
The protestors went back at around 5 pm after they submitted a memorandum to the Delhi Police chief.
Najeeb’s mother, Fatima Nafees, who was accompanied by the protestors, alleged that the Crime Branch officials were troubling her relatives in their search for Najeeb. She said: “The behaviour of the cops who barged into the house of my brother was humiliating. I am already very tensed. Why are the cops troubling my relatives?”
Earlier on Saturday, a team of Crime Branch under the supervision of a DCP went to Badaun in UP and raided Najeeb’s maternal uncle’s place. The raid was videographed. The cops say that they had information that Najeeb’s mail id was being used by his maternal uncle.
The Delhi Police had done massive preparations for the protest. The cops, along with lady police, were deployed in huge numbers so that the gathering could be managed. Coincidently, it was also the day when Amulya Patnaik was appointed the new Commissioner of Police of Delhi. Even the IPS officers who came to congratulate him were seen struck in the traffic.
Meanwhile, search for the missing JNU student has reached Nepal with the Delhi Police team pasting posters at Indo-nepal border areas.
