MY FOCUS WOULD BE ON DIGITISATION: NEW TOP COP
NEW DELHI: “Digitisation of the police force would be my top most priority” announced the New Delhi Police commissioner Amulya Patnaik, minutes after he took charge. In a brief media interaction, Patnaik was quick enough to respond to media questions at the Delhi Police Headquarters just after the official farewell was given to departing Commissioner Alok Verma.
Patnaik took over the charge formally at 5 pm on Tuesday evening. Surrounded by high rank officials, Patnaik emphasised on the importance of cyber security and modernisation of Delhi Police force. Answering a question on how Delhi Police will cope up with the white collar crimes, he answered: “I would see how we could digitise the police functioning. Digitisation would be my area of priority .... we will see how it could be used to reach out to all sections of society.”
Patnaik made his intentions very clear that the Delhi Police will be going to focus on digitisation and would implement mordern techniques to combat crime and save time.
When asked that with online payments, e-wallets and digital transactions more in use, are the Delhi Police competent enough to tackle all such cyber cases, the top cop replied: “Our Cyber Cell of Delhi Police is doing a great job. We have taken steps to ensure that we have cyber units at district levels. We are also in a process of training several officer in cyber crime and cyber offences and that process will continue.”
Women and children security had been another area of concern in Delhi and when the reporters in the commissioner’s room asked what strategy the new police chief has in his mind, he replied: “That will be an area of priority for us. We have been doing a lot of things already and will see how best we can improve it further so that women in Delhi feel safer.”
When asked how would be the Delhi Police’s cooperation with the Delhi government, Patnaik was crisp in his reply saying: “It has been fine all along.”
Amulya Patnaik, a 1985 batch officer, has been appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner after his predecessor Alok Verma has been handed over the responsibility of Director, CBI.
It is said that Amulya Patnaik’s clean and non-controversial image as a police officer helped him secure the post.
Originally from Odisha, Patnaik is learnt to have an image of an investigative officer. He has a good reputation when it comes to law and order and investigations. Some of his noteworthy detections include the Bombay blast accused, the parcel bomb case, the sensational Sarita Vihar kidnapping of a schoolboy by armed gangsters which was solved in a record 12 hours’ time and the dreaded Asghar gang of dacoits and so on.
Patnaik in his fresh innings as the Delhi Police Chief seems to be keen in focussing much on the modern approach by the cops by utilising new techniques to fight cyber crime.
