DU prof injured in Ramjas violence may have damaged kidney
Following violent clashes that broke outside Delhi University’s Ramjas College on February 22, a Delhi University Professor, Prasanta Chakravarty, who was roughed up in the incident was admitted to the Hindu Rao Hospital. On Sunday, he was again rushed to hospital after complaining of severe abdominal pain.
The medical reports stated that Chakravarty has been detected with intense bruises, “concealed spasms” on the right kidney along with injuries to his spinal cord and two ribs. “He has been advised taking bed rest for the next few months,” said sources.
The Delhi University associate professor said, “I was assaulted by those who appeared to be some kind of trained combat personnel and not students.”
Adding to this, he said, “I was mercilessly beaten up by the mob. Also, a certain someone had tried to strangle me with his muffler.”
On February 22, Chakravarty was inside Ramjas College supporting the students who were protesting against the ‘cancellation of a talk by JNU scholars Shehla Rashid and Umar Khalid’.
Following this, a clash between AISA (All India Students Association, the student wing of the CPI-ML) and ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the BJP) students broke out during which he got severely injured.
In a Facebook post, Chakravarty wrote, “I have been diagnosed with a contusion and concealed spasms on both my right kidney and spinal extensor muscles. Perhaps, this was because of the heavy boot kicks. Also, a couple of ribs have been impaired which will need protracted treatment. For now, the pain needs to abate. I have been kept on intravenous medicines and drips. If that does not work, other possibilities will be explored. MLC report of the incident is being followed by the hospital authorities.”
