AAP questions Centre over threats to Gurmehar

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party on Monday said that the Narendra Modi government is to be blamed for the rape and death threats issued to Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur, who bravely took on ABVP members involved in the Ramjas violence.

AAP leader Atishi Marlena asked why Delhi Police had not taken immediate action against ABVP activists who, she said, attacked students, teachers and journalists at Ramjas College here on February 22. “It is clear that the government is culpable,” Marlena told media persons. She added that “ABVP goondaism” had gone up in campuses across the country since the Modi government took office.

Marlena further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was followed those who issued threats to others online. “This ABVP goondagardi is both in the real and the online world.”

She further alleged that ABVP activists, in addition to attacking students, lecturers and journalists, were also threatening police officers – all of which was on camera. Yet, no action was taken against the ABVP members, Marlena said.

AAP legislator Alka Lamba, a former Delhi University student leader herself, said she had never seen such thuggery in the campus during her time. “Today, the ABVP people have taken law in their own hands.” Earlier, AAP leader Ashutosh demanded to know why no BJP or RSS leader had condemned those who threatened Gurmehar.
