NEW DELHI: With the festival of colours just round the corner, the Delhi Police have stepped up measures to keep a strict watch on the safety and security of Delhiites. The cops are gearing up for a deluge of PCR calls involving scuffles, drunken driving related accidents and also major terror attacks that may rock the Capital.

South Delhi saw the maximum security measures after several barricades were erected within 500 metres of each other, as the district police have analysed several sensitive areas and have intensified vehicle checking in and around the district.

According to police data, Hauz Khas, Shahpur Jat, Khirki Extension, Saket Metro station, Lado Sarai, Mehrauli, Kotla Mubarakpur, R K Puram Sector 12, Mohammadpur are the most sensitive areas from where most of the PCR calls related to crime originated in the previous year. Ahead of Holi, Police Control Room (PCR) calls generally shoot up in South Delhi. Based on this trend, the police this year have decided to increase deployment in 50 spots in the area.

In 2016, Holi was on March 24 and as per the analysis of South Delhi Police, PCR calls reported an increase on March 22, 23 and 24 respectively. PCR calls related to quarrels increased to 143 on March 22, 252 on March 23 and 523 on March 24. “We received 212 PCR calls of accidents last year,” police said, adding that 49 cases of molestation were also reported last year during Holi.

The total number of PCR calls related to several crimes, including eve-teasing, was 1976 over three days.

“On March 22 we received 451 calls whereas on March 23 we received 606 calls and on Holi calls increased to 919. The main reason was people created ruckus after consuming liquor,” a senior officer said.

The police have also ramped up their vehicle checking in border areas and are keeping a close eye on the vehicles coming in from Western UP, Haryana to check bootlegging.

Meanwhile, Delhi Traffic Police has made elaborate traffic arrangements to ensure safety of motorists on roads and check incidents of drunken driving, over-speeding, reckless driving, zig-zag driving, red light jumping, triple riding, minor driving, riding without helmet, performing stunts on two-wheelers and other traffic violations.

“Action shall also be initiated against the registered owners of vehicles whose vehicles are found to be driven by minors or unauthorised persons, performing stunts, driving without license,” warned Joint CP Traffic, Garima Bhatnagar.
