To reduce sexual crimes in city, Delhi Police set to study causes

NEW DELHI: Many women and girls in Delhi suffer from genderbased violence like rape and other sexual offences against them. Therefore, sexual violence is a major cause of death and disability for women and girls. Due to the alarming increase in rape cases in the national Capital, Delhi Police intend to undertake sociological study of causes of rapes and psychoanalysis of the accused in rape cases.

According to sources in Delhi Police: “For increasing cases of rapes and sexual violence, drastic measures need to be undertaken by Delhi Police to control the incidents in the city.”

The key notes to be considered while conducting the sociological study would be, understanding the causes of rape, psychoanalysis of accused in rape cases, overall analysis and conclusion and in last, the conclusion.

Through these key notes, “police will develop a better understanding of the probable causes of rape. Various statistical models can be deployed thereafter for analysis of the gathered data to establish co-relations, trends and understand behaviours,” the source said.

“Apart from data, it is important to understand the psychology and motivations of a rape accused in order to develop a suitable strategy to combat such inclinations. This study can be done based on detailed psychological studies and tests on selected accused of rape cases in Delhi. After the analysis of data, the behaviour of accused, experience and cognition will be largely determined,” said the official.

To determine the causes of rapes in Delhi and also for the psychoanalysis of the accused in rape cases, agency and psychological experts are going through the following activities: Preparation of a project plan, preparation of questionnaires and discussion guides and sampling. The project team will conduct a pre-test on a subset of the target population to find out if the questions elicit the desired information. This activity will help discover possible misinter- pretations and misunderstandings which may arise from the questions.

“The research agency will be responsible for identifying the various target groups which would be important to achieve the objectives of the study. However, the target groups will necessarily include people in affected areas/victims/their acquaintances. The sample expected to be studied will be within a range of 400-1,200 people,” the source in Delhi Police said. We are expecting, that through this study, police will develop a strategy to curb these heinous crimes and give a friendly environment to our women,” he added.

To analyse the causes of rapes in city, the agency will carry out a survey of the people in the affected areas and churn out the perceived reasons of rapes in Delhi.

Moreover, the agency will conduct an in-depth interview for psychological study and undertake psychoanalysis tests of accused/convicts in rape cases.

The agency will also undertake psychoanalysis tests of a minimum 100 accused/convicts.

The proposed team would function as a core team with a diverse range of skills.

The team will comprise a project manager, a psychological expert, sociological expert, research associates and field team.
