NEW DELHI: Few days after several petrol pumps in Uttar Pradesh were caught for duping people by dispensing lower quantities of fuel, the Delhi government on Monday ordered to dispatch teams for ensuring that petrol pumps in Delhi are not indulging in the same act.

Recently, after the petrol pumps in UP were caught for cheating people by installing remote controlled electronic chips, 33 were arrested in connection to the same.

The Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Imran Hussain on Monday reviewed the measures being taken for the prevention of unlawful activities by unscrupulous petrol pump owners.

On the same occasion, the Weights and Measures Department officers apprised the Minister that in order to prevent illegal activities of a similar kind, the department should conduct surprise inspections of petrol pumps from time to time with the view to ensure that customers get accurate quantities of fuel.

It was informed that the department ensures that petrol pumps maintain specified calibrated measuring instruments and equipment for their availability on demand by the public for on-the-spot checking of the accuracy of quantities of fuel being dispensed by petrol pumps.

Hussain emphasised the need to ensure that citizens obtain accurate and unadulterated quantities of fuel purchased by them.

Also, the minister has directed the Department for taking a stern legal action against the defaulting units including lodging of FIR, sealing of Petrol Pumps, initiation of prosecution action etc., as the case may be.

Hussain also sought the cooperation and support of public for checking the menace of supplying lesser quantities of fuel by erring petrol pumps and accordingly appealed to the citizens of Delhi to report about any such illegal activities which may come in their notice.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary, Legal Metrology, and Controller, Weights & Measures/legal Metrology Department along with other senior officers.

The Department of Weights & Measures, (also called Legal Metrology Dept), has been mandated to ensure that customers get due to the value of the cost paid on the commodities including fuels of various kinds.
