Water crisis: Sisodia for PMO’S intervention

- ROUSHAN ALI

Accusing the Haryana government of not giving the capital its legal share of water, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has sought intervention of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to tackle the situation.

“Delhi water crisis. Haryana not releasing Delhi's share. I just spoke to L-G and requested him to seek PMO'S intervention,” Sisodia said in a Press conference. “I have directed Delhi Jal Board to file contempt petition in Delhi High Court, because Court strictly ordered to release share of water Delhi ,” said Sisodia.

Sisodia on Tuesday directed the DJB to take all necessary measures to ensure Delhi continues to get equal distribution of water supply with interruption.

Sisodia has directed Chief Secretary M M Kutty to talk to his Haryana counterpart and ensure restoration of full water supply to Delhi as soon as possible.

Delhi's water requirement is 900 million gallons per day, but it is falling short by about 50 MGD since May 8, according to a senior Delhi Jal Board (DJB) official.

“Haryana has reduced water supply to Delhi. I have told Chief Secretary to talk to his Haryana counterpart to ensure immediate supply of water,” Sisodia said in a tweet on Tuesday night.

Sisodia is holding the charge of the water ministry, since rebel AAP leader and former minister Kapil Mishra was sacked from the Delhi cabinet.

If Haryana continues to cut water supply to Delhi, there may be shortage of water supply in some areas of the city, another official said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader on Monday also complained of reduced water supply from Haryana and asked Delhi Chief Secretary to immediately speak to Haryana Chief Secretary to ensure proper water supply.
