Two men held for assault on animal transporters in Baba Haridas Nagar

-

NEW DELHI: Three days after a mob thrashed animal transporters in Baba Haridas Nagar for transporting buffalo calves, Delhi Police on Monday identified two of the attackers and detained them.

Police have also started conducting raids at many place in outer Delhi, as they have reason to believe that many members of the mob involved in the attack are locals.

“So far, we have identified two attackers who were picked up from outer Delhi. We are currently questioning both the accused and are trying to identify more members of the mob. The remaining members will also be identified,” said a senior police official privy to the investigation.

The incident had started after a truck grazed past one of the accused person’s cars, which led to a verbal spat.

However, following the truck was a series of seven cars in which animal transporters were transporting buffalo calves.

The men in the vehicles were transporting the calves, which they had procured from Meham in Haryana and were going to Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh to sell them.

The men had also told the police that they could not furnish any papers regarding the purchase, as they never required documentation in rural transactions.

The police will also look into whether the animal transporters had necessary documentation.

“We are investigating the case from all angles. We are also looking into the documents carried by the men who were beaten up,” the official further said. The police will be relying on manual and technical surveillance to track the remaining members of the mob.

Sources claimed that around five raiding teams have been formed from different police stations, who are at present scouring the area and are on the look-out for remaining members of the mob.

In the meantime, police are also looking into the background of the two accused. Cops have remained tight-lipped about whether they have links to cow vigilantes.

In another case involving a mob attack on a driver who was branded as a cattle thief in Sarai Kale Khan area on July 7, the police are yet to make any arrests in the case.

The driver was assaulted by a 25-men strong mob, who claimed that the victim was transporting buffaloes in his Bolero jeep. Police have, on the other hand claimed that it was a fight over moving parked vehicles from the road.
