Hussain calls for ‘harmonious’ solution to resolve deforestation

NEW DELHI: Environment and Forest Minister Imran Hussain on Monday directed the concerned departments to come up with a ‘harmonious’ solution to protect trees, along with action for removal of traffic congestion.

The direction came during a meeting with environmentalists and officers on felling of trees at Aurbindo Marg.

Hussain met a delegation of environmental activists, led by Padmavati Dwivedi, in the presence of senior officers of the Forest Department, Public Works Department and Traffic Police.

The Minister asked the environmentalists to get in touch with the special task force led by the DCP (Traffic) on this issue.

He also asked the Horticulture Department to suggest a better solution for protection of trees.

The Minister observed that removal of traffic congestion is a priority for the Delhi government.

Moreover, protecting trees, maintaining existing pedestrian lane, slip lane, developing cycle tracks etc. are also top priorities.

Hussain expressed optimism that with the combined effort of all departments and environmentalists, a long-term solution can be found.

Hussain observed that air pollution is a serious matter in Delhi. Poor quality of air is responsible for falling health standards leading to asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory diseases among children and the elderly.

Green cover acts as a buffer against air pollution and a holistic solution to the problem has to be evolved, he said.
