‘Increase manpower for better policing’

- ABHAY SINGH

NEW DELHI: Central Delhi, an important district of city police, needs more force for proper policing and for which the district police had written to the Delhi Police headquarters. Police sources said that in the letter, senior officials of the district police had requested to convert Kamla Market police station as an “officers oriented police station”.

According to police, large number of law and order arrangements including VVIP movements are done by the staff of IP Estate police station on a daily basis as stadiums and several important governments and political parties offices come under the jurisdiction of the police station. The number of arrangements will increase in future. “The manpower and physical resources of IP Estate police station are not sufficient to ensure proper arrangements. Therefore, it is requested to post additional inspectors in addition to present strength and provide more government vehicles to the police station,” claimed the letter. The letter claimed that Kamla Market police station should be converted into “officers oriented police station” which can enhance the professional efficiency of Delhi Police in handling various types of demonstrations and Dharnas.

The newly conceptualized Officer-oriented Policing Model was started in Parliament Street police station (New Delhi District). “Several programmes happen in the Kamla Market police station jurisdiction. At Ramlila ground, several dharnas take place. Sometimes, protestors start to argue with the police personnel. Such large number of gatherings is also required to be handled by adequate police force but the police station have limited force,” claimed the letter. The local police had to withdraw forces from other police station for making law and order arrangements which hampers the investigation work of the police station.

Police added that the police station requires more police personnel above the rank of ASI level. “The officer above ASI level will also bring the experience in crowd handling and public management in such a way that they will be able to defuse the situation of an arguing and agitating crowd with natural manner,” claimed the letter.
