Cauvery protests: All IPL 2018 matches moved out of Chennai

- MPOST BUREAU

In a big blow to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and it’s fans, the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches scheduled to be held in Chennai have been shifted to another venue.

The decision by the IPL governing body was taken after protests by Tamil outfits who are protesting against Centre’s delay in constituting the Cauvery Management Board. Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) issued a statement saying that ticket sales for the match between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals on April 20 have been postponed and further details will be intimated in due course.

Earlier on Tuesday, a member of pro-tamil outfits threw shoes into the ground during the fifth match of the IPL between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. One of the shoes landed near the feet of CSK player Ravindra Jadeja, who was fielding at long-on, in the eighth over of the first innings. The other one fell near Faf du Plessis’, who was carrying drinks. However, the match continued as CSK recorded a thrilling victory by chasing down 203 runs.

A Tamil outfit also threatened to unleash snakes at the MA Chidambaram stadium as hundreds of Cauvery protesters briefly took over key roads leading to the venue in a bid to disrupt the first match of this season in the city.

After being suspended for two years due to corruption scandals, CSK made a return to their fortress in Chepauk after 1065 days. However, their homecoming was marred by protesters who demanded that the games be stopped as it was being held to distract attention from the Cauvery water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Earlier, even before the match could begin, hundreds of protestors hit the streets calling for a boycott of the matches. Security around the stadium was heightened ahead of the match and supporters were not allowed to take mobile phones or any other electronic devices inside the Chepauk.

NEW DELHI: Apart from his scheduled day-long fast protesting the impasse in the Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Defence Expo - a biennial exhibition of weapons and military hardware at Tiruvidanthal, in Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

The tagline of Defexpo this year is "India: The Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub" to showcase India's capability in the export of defence systems and components.

More than 670 exhibitors including over 150 international exhibitors will take part in the Defexpo. MSME sector will have a fair representation this time around 15 percent.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will also be present at the occasion and will join PM Modi by fasting.

Through an audio mes- sage on Wednesday morning, the Prime Minister briefed all BJP MPS and MLAS that the Congress has held the Parliament hostage. "Few people who couldn't manage a win in 2014, do not want the country's development now," PM Modi added.

"They could not retain power that's why they did not let House run," he also mentioned.

Making a scathing attack on the major Opposition party, the Prime Minister also called the Congress 'megalomaniac'.

BJP chief Amit Shah and other party parliamentarians will also hold a protest in various part of the country.

Meanwhile, the Defexpo comes amid heightened protests across the southern state demanding setting up of the Cauvery Management Board. There is widespread anger over the central government dragging its feet in implementing the Supreme Court guidelines.

The opposition DMK has asked people to wear black shirts and sarees during Modi's visit to formally inaugurate the 10th edition of Defexpo.

PM will reach the capital city of Tamil Nadu on Thursday morning and then will reach the programme venue by chopper. In the afternoon he will also visit the cricket stadium of IIT Madras and later inaugurate the Diamond Jubilee building of Cancer Institute. LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said the BJP is dangerous for society as it conspires to polarise votes on communal lines.

He also alleged that farmers are committing suicides, youth are hunting jobs and traders are facing problems under the BJP government. "BJP is dangerous for society...this party conspires to polarise the votes on communal lines besides creating rifts in society and diverting attention from development issues," Yadav told partymen in a meeting at the party headquarters here.

The SP chief said if all remained united they will be able to effectively stop the saffron party in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

On the statements of BJP leaders regarding SP-BSP alliance, Yadav said there is frustration in their (BJP) party over it and they have now started comparing their political adversaries with animals.
