KANWARIA NABBED IN VANDALISM CASE
NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Thursday arrested one of the kanwarias involved in vandalising a car in west Delhi’s Moti Nagar area, after the car’s driver allegedly brushed one of the pilgirms with her vehicle.
Police said that the accused Rahul Bose, alias Billa, was picked up from Uttam Nagar, adding that more arrests would be made very soon.
“26-year-old Bose is a resident of Uttam Nagar in west Delhi and had been arrested previously for a case of theft by Uttam Nagar police in 2014. Our teams analysed CCTV footages from a large number of shops and kanwaria camps on the road. Moreover, the records of kanwaria camps and the police stations falling in the Najafgarh road were scrutinised and compared before zeroing in on the accused,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vijay Kumar told media persons.
Bose was picked up by a Delhi Police team investigating the vandalism in Moti Nagar, in which a group of kanwarias on Tuesday were filmed by a mobile phone camera smashing the car with baseball bats and sticks.
“The main accused, who is still absconding, got his hand injured with the car glass when he smashed the window of the car. Since then, a rumour had spread that he was roughed up by the car occupants. This is when Bose joined the group and vandalised the car. We will take the help of the victims to strengthen our case against the accused,” said the DCP.
Police said that the accused admitted to his involvement in the vandalism.
On Wednesday, the Delhi Police had registered a suo motu case against unknown kanwarias for wrongful restraint and damage to property in Moti Nagar.
The video footage, which went viral on Tuesday, shows around 15-20 kanwarias going berserk and totalling the car in the middle of the busy road near Moti Nagar Metro station.
Police said that during inquiry, it was revealed that a heated exchange of words had erupted between the occupants of the car, the woman drive and a male friend, after the car brushed with one of the kanwarias who was walking on the road.
The kanwarias were reportedly trying to make way between the car and a cart when the car brushed one of them, after which they attacked the car in a group, forcing the occupants to flee the spot.
