- ABHAY SINGH

NEW DELHI: “Why she dragged my mother knowing that she was under the wheels,” said 20-year-old Shankar, son of Phoolwati, a homeless woman who was crushed to death by an SUV driven by an errant 20-year-old woman driver on Sunday. The accident left the family with no bread-butter earner. Shankar told Millennium

Post that for the last rites, the homeless people and the temple where her mother went for prayers helped him by giving money. “My mother did not want her three children to live on the street so she admitted one of my sisters in the NGO where she is learning fashion designing while my another sister is married; I did not study much but she never told me to earn money through begging or ragpicking,” said the son. Remembering the last time, Shankar stated that he had some argument with the mother and in the morning she came to shelter home to convince him.

Talking about the 20-yearold accused who was driving the car which ended his mother's life, his son claimed that there was no reason to drag her mother.

He further alleged that the accused girl did not allow the driver, who was also in the SUV, to drive the car. Reacting to this, DCP (New Delhi) Madhur Verma claimed that driver was not found inside the vehicle, which was driven by the girl herself. “The accused claimed that she was not aware that the woman was under the wheels,” police sources said.

Phoolwati lived in the small shanty nearby shelter home and now the family is dependent on Shankar. Santosh Gupta from Salaam Baalak Trust where the deceased daughter is learning fashion designing stated that the deceased wanted their children to be educated.

“She was a ragpicker and sometimes used to sell flowers but never wanted her children to do any odd jobs she was knowing the benefits of education,” said Gupta. The homeless people living in the shelter home came for the help of the three children and they gave money for the funeral. “So far we have not received any help, we are left with nothing; my mother was only bread and butter earner in the family,” said Shankar.
