Sharing the food for ‘Sab ki Eid’

- ZAFAR ABBAS

NEW DELHI: What else can bring amplified happiness in a festival like Eid Ul Zuha than sharing the food with the homeless and needy. This Eid ul Zuha, members of the walled city-based NGO ‘Marham’ have decided to collect ‘mutton’ from specific areas in Delhi and then get it cooked from famous bawarchis of the walled city before distributing the food among the poor, labourers and the orphans. They have termed it as ‘Sab Ki Eid’.

Marham seems to be driven by the fact that many Muslim families often stuff their refrigerators with mutton but somehow do not find needy person to distribute the meat. Hence, when the orphans and the needy sleep empty stomach, Marham decided to provide a platform to the Muslim community to include the needy in their celebration of the festival of sacrifice.

“We collect meat (only mutton) from the mainstream society and store it in our cold storage. And for the next one

Last year, Marham collected about 700 kg of mutton and fed over 3,500 poor people. In 2016, the organisation collected around 450 kg and fed about 2,500 poor all over Delhi

week or a fortnight, we keep giving feasts to people living in the JJ clusters, Rain Baseras, recovery shelters and footpaths including them in our celebration,” said Irtiza Quraishi, founding member of Marham.

Marham would be doing this for the third consecutive year. Last year, they collected about 700 kg and fed over 3,500 poor people. In 2016, the organisation collected around 450 kg of mutton and fed around 2,500 poor all over Delhi.

The NGO has set up its collection centres at various places in Muslim majority areas and has appealed to the people to donate the meat there for convenience. The NGO believes that this would bring the required help to the poor and needy by those who have in surplus.
