Drunk man drives car on Delhi footpath, leaves 2 dead
Two others injured in accident; a case has been registered and probe is on
NEW DELHI: In a suspected case of drunken driving, a 25-year-old man drove his car on a footpath in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden, killing two men and injuring two others in the early hours on Sunday, the police said.
The driver, Devesh, who works in a software firm, was arrested from the spot, they added.
Police said the incident happened around 4.30 am. Devesh told police he was driving from Paschim Vihar towards the airport where he was supposed to meet a friend.
Devesh was in an inebriated condition and was driving at high speed. He lost control of his Honda Civic car and ended up driving it over the footpath near Rajouri Garden flyover where four men were sleeping.
Two of them died while two others were grievously injured, the police said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Monika Bhardwaj confirmed the incident and the arrest of the driver.
NEW DELHI: Sleeping on the pavement proved fatal for two persons who were crushed to death under the wheels of the car driven by a 23-year-old youth in West Delhi's Rajouri Garden on Sunday. Police claimed that they have arrested the errant driver in the case who was drunk at the time of the incident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Monika Bharadwaj stated that the incident came to light on Sunday at about 4:30 am when they received a PCR call. The caller claimed that the incident took place at Ring Road in front of ESI hospital. The staff of Rajouri Garden police station reached there and found one Honda Civic white colour car in accidental condition. The injured were reported to be sent to ESI hospital.
Police claimed that the team visited the hospital and found MLCS of the victims in which two of them died. The
deceased were identified as Noora (50), Shukla alias Krishan Kumar Dubey who lived in front of the hospital. Both of them were declared brought dead. The two survivors in mishap were Ram Singh (55) who was fit for statement while Manoj (35) is reportedly critical.
“Ram Singh stated that he along with his three known persons were sleeping on the footpath in front of ESI hospital.
At about 4:30 am when he got up, a Honda Civic Car driven by accused crushed them in which two of his colleagues died and two injured,” said the police officer.
The police claimed that the accused was apprehended on the spot and got medically examined in which it was found that he had consumed alcohol. Later the culprit was identified as Devesh, a resident of Paschim Vihar
area. He is working with a software company as an accountant and was not having any licence. A case under section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC has been registered at Rajouri Garden police station and further investigation is being carried out.
It is not the first time when a homeless has been killed on the street of Delhi. Last month a 50-year-old homeless woman
died in a road accident in New Delhi area. Minutes before her death, the deceased was dragged for a few meters by the vehicle which was driven by an errant 20-year-old woman who was arrested. The data of the year 2018 (till April 15) accessed by Millennium Post stated that 1,473 cases of the simple accidents were reported whereas 440 accidents were fatal killing more than 450 persons.
