NEW DELHI: The investigation in the interstate drug cartel of more than 37,000 Tramadol tablets which was busted by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police on September 3, revealed that the accused also sold the medicine to the college going student to earn the profit. The probe also disclosed that the medicine which was meant for concerned medical shops were diverted to the accused with the help of some associates.

Police claimed that Tramadol is a powerful painkiller, a synthetic opiate drug and has been declared Psychotropic substance and its sale in the country is regulated and controlled by the NDPS act. The synthetic opiate is known to be abused on a wide scale to suppress pain and boost strength during injury and induce a sense of euphoria hence, it is also known as the ‘fighter drug' among international anti-nar- cotics authorities. The drug is prescribed for relief from severe pain. Three accused were arrested in this case.

According to the investigator, with the help of agents in Delhi the accused sold medicines to the students to earn the profit. “They used to sell med- icine at the high price to the youths,” added the investigator. The accused got the high number of tablets from Rourkee and Agra where there are pharmaceutical manufacturing companies. With the help of some associates, they used to divert the consignments to them. The accused illegally sold the tab

lets to chemist shops which are being probed. “They have very few agents in Delhi who

look after this illegal work,” said the police officer. The team who made the arrest was formed under DCP (Crime) Dr Ramgopal Naik and led by ACP Arvind Kumar. Value of recovered tablets in the grey market is Rs 37.50 lakh.
