GURUGRAM: Forget nightclubs or even educational institutions, the drug peddlers are now targetting the upscale societies in Gurugram. On Saturday, a group of members were arrested by the team of Gurugram police, who were supplying cannabis (Ganja)to some of the residents of Phase-3. The operation was carried out by a special team of Gurugram police after receiving a tip-off. The team is now inspecting other locations in the residential areas where the supply of drugs is taking place.

According to sources, earlier the drugs used to be supplied in the villages surrounding these upscale residential societies but stricter vigilance has resulted in the change in the entire process by the suppliers and the buyers. Being the richest district of the state, the drug mafia along with illegal liquor trade is now posing a major law and order challenge to police. Not only the Gurugram police officials but also the special task force (STF) has become involved in curbing the drug mafia in the city.

According to sources, most of the big criminal gangs that are operating in the city are now shifting their focus from illegal land deals, extortion to transportation and supply of drugs. While synthetic drugs like Ganja, Sulfa are in high demand, the other forms like charas, opium and heroin are also gaining popularity.

Most of these drugs are coming from the areas like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. However, to expand the base, the drug mafia have also begun procuring their supply from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Himachal Pradesh.
