GURUGRAM: To gauge the fact that how much the business of liquor vending units are booming, Dundahera foot over bridge (FOB) in Gurugram district can be observed as an exemplar, where over four wine shops have opened around the structure so far. However, the recent controversies generated about the nightclubs in Gurugram have not deterred the party-goers. Instead, they are now frequenting to these units for passing their leisurely time.

Sensing a viable business opportunity, the liquor vending units have upped their game and rather than just sell- ing hard drink they are also providing services like dining, valet services, etc. These units have not only gained immense popularity in and around the MG road, where the maximum number of nightclubs have borne the brunt but in other areas as well including Sohna Road, Golf Course Road, Golf Course Extension Road and the Old-delhi road.

According to the owners of these units, their clientele base is only growing and diversifying. “The residents of Gurugram love their drinks but now we have also begun providing them dining experiences and valet parking. Today most of the office-goers from Cyber greens visit our units to have a good time,” said Rajveer, one of the managers of the units around the MG Road.

One major reason behind expanding the services in these liquor vending units can be attributed to the fact that the Haryana Government in 2017, had banned open drinking. Even though the liquor vending units are raking in the moolah, still there is a challenge of how these units are encouraging open drinking and indecency among the citizens.

Despite the Government banned drinking at public places, such acts can still be witnessed at MG road which has already gained a notorious fame of poor law and order. Earlier, various residents have demanded the closure of the

liquor vending units that have come up in large numbers around the multinational offices and selling liquor to the huge number of customers as well. “No one is against the

liquor vending units per say. However, most of the customers who came over here, behave in an unruly and indecent manner. They should therefore not be situated near the office complexes or residential societies,” said Charu Aggarwal, a city resident. It seems that Desi thekas now becoming major party hubs for the Gurugram youngsters.
