Varsity is likely to witness a triangular contest; Counting will take place on Sept 13
NEW DELHI: Since the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) election is scheduled for Wednesday, the university students will be electing their representatives for the academic year 2018-2019. The election will be held in colleges of both the campuses -North and South - to elect the members of the Central Council. The voting process will start at 8:30 am and end at 7:30 pm. The counting for the votes will be done on September 13.
The election will see a triangular contest this time with the entry of the alliance of All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) student wing, Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) as the alliance’s entry is expected to divide the votes which may have gone in favour of either of the two major student bodies, National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). had bagged the top post last year, will look at strengthening its position, while (ABVP) will seek to regain the lost ground.
The CYSS-AISA sought for mandate to begin a positive politics. “Delhi University is known for quality education in the whole world. The people studied here are in different countries of the world, working on bigger posts. The
university is counted as one of the best universities in the world but whenever it is a matter of student politics, it has not only defamed the country but also made politics filthy and hideous, and its only reason is ABVP and NSUI,” said Atishi, AAP spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Training their gun at the rival ABVP, the NSUI on
Tuesday demanded cancellation of nomination of ABVP’S Vice-presidential candidate for DUSU elections for indulging in violence. This seems to be calculated strategy by ABVP to intimidate students through violence in the run-up to the DUSU polls.
ABVP members, however, condemned the incident of the clashes in Delhi’s Zakir Hussain College (Sandhya). The absence of a fearless and creative environment in educational institutions has always been favorable and whenever there is a climate of violence or fear, then ABVP has raised the voice of the people in a democratic way against such an environment in the interest of the students.
It may be noted that the DUSU poll plays an important and microcosm of the larger democratic set up in our country and hence gives the students a hands-on experience of how a democratic process of electing representatives works.
Last year, a total of 10 candidates contested for the presidential post in which main contestants were ABVP’S Rajat Choudhary, NSUI’S Rocky Tusheed, AISA’S Parul Chauhan and Independents Raja Choudury and Alka. NSUI had bagged the posts of president and vice president last year while the Rss-affiliated ABVP had won the posts of secretary and joint secretary.
