Workplace harassment bane for women professionals

- PIYUSH OHRIE

GURUGRAM: Harassment during official duty hours often comes to bite the Gurgram woman professionals which are employed in a large number in Millennium City's workplaces. On an average, there are 40 such cases that get registered annually in City Police stations. How the trend is proving to be dangerous for women professionals was seen this year when a class eight student in a private school texted his teacher asking her consent for sex.

In 2017, there were reports of how a woman professional in an MNC resigned after she alleged that her firm did not take any action against a senior who physically molested her. Highlighting the challenges some of the women professional when speaking to Millennium Post said that rather than being more brazen in molesting now the culprits are resorting to online abuses. “There has been definitely a change in the mindset of the women. They have more options and definitely can stand up to their male bosses if they feel they have been subjugated either sexually or professionally. Having said that now there is a different challenge of how men are targetting women through the online medium where they use Twitter and Facebook to maligning the women character,” said Charu Aggarwal

The situation seems to be even worse for the blue collar workers who are working in the industrial units of Udyog Vihar and Sector-37. Most of these industrial units do not even have the internal mechanism for resolving such complaints. Moreover, now the polices are being drafted in some of the units that are not hiring women who are married as they are not flexible of not doing the nightshifts. It must be noted that most of the industrial places are not poorly lit but there have been a lot of wine shops that have come up in and around the area. “Molestation is big a law and order challenge. Daily we get complaints of domestic violence across different police stations. The inability of the women to file complaints resulted in us opening the counselling units,” said a senior official from Gurugram police. We have counselled people who are rickshaw pullers to people who travel in Jaguars. However counselling units should not give impressions that we will be soft on the culprits,” he added.
