EVMS absolutely tamper proof, counting in DUSU polls stopped due to ‘glitch’
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India claims that Electronic Voting machine ( EVMS) is absolutely tamper proof, but counting for the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) polls, which began on Thursday, was stopped by the election committee due to a "glitch in EVMS".
It means that the suspense over EVMS tampering is still mongering among people. It was emerged just after AAP had staged a “live demonstration” of alleged EVM manipulation in the Delhi Assembly. AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj had claimed that anyone knowing a “secret code” can tamper with the EVMS and the code can be fed into a machine while the vote is being cast.
Now Across the Country, as many as 17 opposition parties have been revived their demand for reverting to Paper ballots in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
However, the election commission has reiterated that it will continue to use EVMS along with the VVPATS in all forthcoming elections. When the EVMS first started malfunctioning, the election officials reasoned with the student factions to give some time to repair or replace them. Congress-backed National Students' Union of India alleged that "faulty EVMS" were used in the Delhi University Students Union elections.
The counting of votes for student body election in Delhi University was stopped midway on Thursday after some EVMS stopped working, a polling officer said.
NSUI and the Bjp-backed ABVP broke into a fight at a counting centre in north Delhi's Model Town after the EVMS malfunctioned.
Eyewitnesses said glasses were broken during the scuffle. "We had proposed rectification of the faulty EVMS and resumption of the counting but the students were not ready for it. It was decided to suspend counting,” Election official said.
The DUSU election was held on Wednesday at 52 polling centres amid heavy police presence; it registered a turnout of 44.46 per cent.
