Imran Hussain stresses on post-plantation care

- OUR CORRESPONDENT

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Thursday ordered that all plantation activities should be undertaken adequately taken care of by regular watering and proper post-plantation care must be ensured.

Delhi Environment Minister Imran Hussain stated that all greening agencies in the city should strive to ensure a 100 per cent survival rate of the plantation or thereabouts. Only then, the real purpose of reducing air pollution by tree plantation will be achieved.

During the mega-plantation drive on September 8, over five lakh trees and saplings were planted at 643 locations across Delhi. More than 70 different kinds of indigenous species of trees/shrub saplings suiting local flora or habitats were planted, such as Mango, Jamun, Guava, Peepal, Barh, Pilkhan, Imli, Amla, Bahera, Simal, Gulmohar, Amaltas etc.

“During an inspection on Thursday, the Minister

observed that overall the plantation showed normal growth but at some pockets, it appeared that the plantation was not adequately watered and taken care of,” said an official.

Hussain then directed the Forest Department to coordinate with other greening agencies for ensuring proper post plantation care and upkeep of plants.

Last week, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had launched the mega-plantation drive by planting a sapling at the Yamuna floodplain in Usmanpur village. Thousands of others joining him in the initiative.

The Aam Aadmi Party-led government planted five lakh trees and shrubs in a day as part of the drive in the city.

Officials said that around one lakh students and residents are participated in the campaign from 600 locations across the city to fight air pollution.

The Chief Minister had said that studies have shown 70 per cent of pollution in Delhi to be originating beyond its borders. But “this could not be an excuse to avoid tackling the situation.”
