GURUGRAM: In less than 24 hours, two incidents of rape have been reported from Gurugram. Shockingly both the rape survivors are minors. The incidents were reported from Sector -5 area where a class X student was raped and the second incident occurred in Chadu village where a 16-yearold was sexually assaulted.

Such was the brutality of the crime against the minor that the 16-year-old girl was first abducted, sedated, raped and then dumped without clothes in a desolate area of Chandu village. The police are also trying to ascertain the facts that whether the rape survivor was gang-raped. The case has been registered by the police officials in Rajendra Park police station. The rape survivor is said to be from Uttar Pradesh and had been residing in Gurugram with her family to sustain their livelihood. She was abducted from the house at a time when she was disposing of the garbage.

The second case was also not less horrendous with the complainant stating that not only was she raped by the person identified as Pawan but in committing such a crime he also filmed the act and blackmailed her to keep quiet on the entire incident. The rape survivor, however, mustered the courage and reported the matter to the police that led to the registering of the FIR in the Sector-5 police station.

In both the cases, the police have registered the cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO)- Section -6. According to the police, even as the culprits in both the case are still at large they have been identified and will soon be arrested. Gurugram along with its counterpart Faridabad is leading in terms of sexual crimes against minors. In 2017, 106 cases of sexual crimes against minors were reported while in 2016 115 cases were filed. Not only sexual crimes but the police officials also have to deal with increased cases of human trafficking.

On an average, 10 cases are registered in city police stations regarding sexual crimes against minors. What is even more worrying is that over 25 cases are being heard every month by the Child Welfare Committee. According to the officials of CWC, the main reason why they are being approached is due to the complexities in the law and embarrassment faced during the police investigations.
