NEW DELHI: 20-year-old Chandni got a new lease of life as AIIMS doctors have successfully removed 15 kg tumour from her uterus. Chandni, who hails from Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, was worried about the unusual growth in her abdomen and the size of her stomach was increasing alarmingly.

“Her stomach was swollen like a balloon as if she has got pregnant because of the tumour, which was very near to the uterus but the doctors succeeded in extracting the tumour without disturbing the womb,” said an oncology expert.

Chandni reached AIIMS and a CT scan revealed the tumour had grown in her uterus. Initially, doctors feared that they will have to remove the uterus in bid to remove the tumour. However, doctors were successful in removing the tumour without harming the uterus. Surgical oncology expert at AIIMS Dr MD Ray said, "Usually, in such cases, when stomach size increases, people choose ayurveda, homeopathy or other treatments. But, one should first get it diagnosed for treatment in time."

The doctor said when the woman came to them she was in continuous pain and her stomach was swollen. A CT scan revealed that there was a huge tumour, which was removed on October 22 after four-hour long surgery. It was the largest uterine tumour AIIMS doctors had ever operated upon. The case has been sent for a place in India's Book Of Records.

Dr Ray said that whenever there is a tumour like this or the size of the stomach increases, people fall into the chaos of Ayurveda and Homeopathy because of enhanced size of abdomen due to tumour.

At the primary stage, most of the patients do not under stand the real cause.

Doctor Ray informed that whenever there is such kind of swelling at tummy, one should check it immediately, and should rush to any tertiary care hospital.

This type of tumour is medically named as leiomyoma, he added.

The doctor informed that tumour was growing rapidly and its cells could grip the uterus and ovary, a slight mistake could have damaged her uterus and ovary, consequently, it could have worsened her remaining life. Had the uterus cell been involved with the tumour, then she would have never become a mother. But now after the successful operation, she can conceive and become a mother after marriage.

The doctor further added that a 4 kg of waste fluid was accumulated inside the tumour, which was taken out during the surgery and later, the tumour was removed.
