Revamping of MG road fails to take off
GURUGRAM: Known for its glitzy malls, plush offices and spacious residential condominium societies, the Mehrauli-gurugram road (MG road) has contributed a deal in making Gurugram the millennium city. Despite its significance, MG road also known as mall mile continues to reel under the burden of crumbling infrastructure.
A visit to MG road in today's times will lead to commuter experiencing potholes on various roads, dysfunctional streetlights, illegally parked vehicles, poor waste management systems, waning green cover and poorly maintained footpaths. It was however not meant to be that way.
Major changes were expected at one of the popular roads of the National Capital Region. Some of the changes that are expected to be brought in making the route signal free, installing LED streetlights, setting up kiosks, improving the quality of walkways, a free Wi-fi at the three-kilometre stretch and also improving the green cover.
For this initiative, the discussion was also held with various multinational companies to aid the public agencies to revamp the MG road. Despite the assurances by the public officials that the work to improve the infrastructure is being carried out, on the ground the work the grand plan has failed to kick-off.
One of the major works that are visible by the public agencies is to improve the sewage system of the road for which massive hole has been dug out around the DLF Phase-2 area.
In what can prove to be a major reprieve for the commuters however the work for the building of the underpass has begun at the IFFCO Chowk and is expected to be complete by the end of March.
There have been minor overhauling processes that have been carried out at regu
lar intervals at MG Road but after a long time, major developmental works will be carried out when the project is undertaken.
Meanwhile, after more than four and a half year of Pub
lic-private Partnership (PPP) between a renowned developer and Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) Golf Course Road that adjoins MG Road has been made signal free.
There is a requirement of a planned development at MG Road. At one point of time, Gurugram was being compared with Singapore and the developments at MG Road was seen to be a model of development. Over the years the dream has faded away.
Of late, the infrastructure at Golf Course Road has been made world class but it has taken a lot of time and still, it is not fully perfect,” said Chetan Chugh, a city resident.
