20K litres of free water: One of AAP govt’s major achievements

- ROUSHAN ALI

NEW DELHI: Since last four years, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is providing 20,000 litres of water absolutely free for consumers who has water meter in their household. In addition to this, Delhi government has laid new pipelines in as many as 319 colonies. “We have tried our best to ensure water for all by providing free water and laying pipelines in neglected areas. We are sure that we will lay new lines & will make drinking water available in every household of Delhi in next years,” said Jal Board Vice Chairman while talking to Millennium Post.

It may be mentioned that water is being supplied to over 17 million people in Delhi through a water supply network comprising 11,350 km pipelines and 105 underground reservoirs for rationalised distribution of supply. Delhi uses an average of 835 MGD raw water daily from a supply of about 906 MGD (as of 2014).

Appreciating the works carried out by the Delhi ruling AAP government, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal claimed that no government in the country since Independence has worked the way his government has been working for the people ‘tirelessly’ in the last four years. The Delhi Jal Board, chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, has approved Rs 5,137 crore annual budget. Out of which Rs 2,350 crore approved under the planned segment, while Rs 2787.63 crore for non-planned segment for the year 2018-2019.

The Board approved construction of 6 MLD STP at housing complex at Savada Gherwra along with 10 years of operation and maintenance contract. The peripheral network on the command of Karala UGR upto Sawda Ghevra has already been

laid. The above project will benefit the whole population of the area. The Delhi government had given its nod to four new projects in the city for a better water supply in the coming summers.

The projects will include water extraction from six locations between Okhla and Wazirabad, development of recently identified water pockets in Dwarka, installation of bores in areas with high water table and restarting the closed ranney wells and borewells across Delhi. The decision was taken by CM and DJB Chairman Arvind Kejriwal in a meeting, where he directed that all the four projects should be completed by Marchend. The Central Ground Water Board, in a 2016 report, had identified six locations on the Yamuna flood plain between Wazirabad and Okhla with a potential of 383 MLD (million

litres per day) water.
