Victory for IMA as NMC bill stand dumped

- OUR CORRESPONDENT

NEW DELHI: It may prove to be a major relief to doctor's fraternity, who have been objecting to the passage of National Medical Commission Bill (NMC), as the contentious bill stand dumped soon after the Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die on Wednesday.

The NCM Bill was pending in the Upper House after it was passed in the Lok Sabha. As per the rule if a bill is passed in the Lok Sabha and fails to clear the Rajya Sabha prior to the end of the tenure of the Lok Sabha, then the bill is considered as null and void.

Commenting on the move, Rajya Sabha MP and Indian Medical Association president Dr Santanu Sen said, “Continuous and untiring efforts of team IMA finally could give a great sense of relief to the fraternity as the NMC is dumped.”

“The IMC Ordinance, which passed in Lok Sabha, got arrested in the Upper House. On Tuesday, when we met Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, he informed that the government was desperate to pass Consumer Protection Bill,” Sen said.

“The government was all set to pass three important bills and in the list Consumer Protection Bill was the second one. Having no other way than to be very aggressive, TMC, SP and BSP MPS protested when the bill was taken up in the House,” the TMC MP said. “The House got adjourned for 15 minutes. We discussed the issue with Chairman and convinced him about its consequences. Finally, the Chairman announced that the CPA Bill wouldn't be taken up and took another insignificant Bill in place of it. It's a historical victory of IMA,” said Sen, the IMA national president.
