RPF constable dies while saving four from being hit by train

NEW DELHI: In an act of bravery, 50-year-old constable Jagbir Singh Rana from Railway Protection Force (RPF) died after he saved four lives in Adarsh Nagar-azadpur rail section on March 21.

The Braveheart died after being hit by a train while he was saving other people. As a mark of generosity, the family has donated his eyes.

According to Northern Railway, Jagbir Singh Rana was on duty at signal number seven in Adarsh Nagar-azadpur rail section on.

"At around 21.30 hrs, one woman and 3 children were crossing the railway tracks.

To save these persons from the approaching train number 14011 Hoshiarpur Express, coming on the Up line, he ran towards the tracks to save them from being run over," said Northern Railway.

While he was successful in saving the lives of the children and woman, he was hit by the fast-approaching train number 12012 Kalka Shatabdi on Down

line. He died on the spot in the

line of duty.

Rohit son of the braveheart told that his father always told him to be dedicated towards the duty.

" My father always told me that whatever you do, there should be dedication towards work," said Rohit.

He further said that from Haryana his father used to leave home three hours before saying that he did not want to reach late for his duty.

He is survived by his wife, school/college going sons and two married daughters.

Director General (RPF) Arun Kumar and DRM (Delhi) RN Singh sent their heartfelt condolences and requested the RPF family to help and stand by the bereaved family in this hour of crisis.

Inspector General/rpf VK Dhaka and other senior officers were present to pay homage to the martyred RPF constable during wreath-laying ceremony at Dayabasti.

Jagbir Singh Rana was a very hard working and honest personnel. He joined RPF on 27.07.1989.

In view of his meritorious services, he was awarded twice by Rail Rajya Mantri and Divisional Railway Manager. His demise is a great loss to RPF and Indian Railways.

Moreover, the data on accidental deaths within railway police jurisdiction – accessed by the – stated that in 2016, 816 men and 82 women lost their lives in rail accidents.

Last year, the numbers were 790 persons (695 men and 95 women.

Last year, till August 7, as many as 492 casualties – 457 men and 35 women – were reported.
