TIS HAZARI: LAWYERS STRIKE INDEFINITE

- ABHINAY LAKSHMAN

NEW DELHI: As Delhi went into a state of near-complete

lockdown on Tuesday with more than 20,000 Delhi Police officials revolting against their own top brass looking to find some support from the senior officials of the police force in the Capital; the advocates here are showing no signs of backing down with all district bar associations saying that their strike will go on indefinitely, as some of their key concerns were yet to be addressed.

This comes even after the Bar Council of India (BCI) had issued two statements one on Sunday night and another on Monday night, calling all lawyers in Delhi to end the strike and resume work from Tuesday in light of the favourable order delivered by a special bench of the Delhi High Court, which directed the transfer of two senior police officials involved in the Tis Hazari clash on Saturday.

However, several advocates practicing in the district courts and participating in what they have called their "movement for justice" have said that the BCI has left them hanging and now the Co-ordination Committee of all District Court Bar Associations will continue to lead the strike indefinitely until their key demands are met.

Speaking to the Millennium Post, a senior lawyer who whished not to be named said that the advocates are calling for the prosecution of the police officer who fired his weapon, injuring three lawyers, under the Arms Act.

Further, the advocate said that the Delhi High Court order that directed the transfer of one Special CP and one Additional DCP was not enough and that stricter action should be taken against the senior officials who were present at the Tis Hazari clash.

Another lawyer participating in the agitation said that the Delhi High Court had not addressed a key demand in its Sunday order, which was the implementation of the Advocate Protection Act.

Condemning the isolated incidents of some lawyers asaulting police and journalists, the lawyer also said, “This kind of action from a handfull of people is putting the entire movement at risk. This is a peaceful agitation and we don't support violence of any kind. Ours is a justified fight.”
